Reshape tables with column splitting, unpivot and summaries

Choose the operation that matches the receiving system’s table structure. Splitting one column, building a display value from several columns and turning monthly columns into rows solve different problems.

Split columns or build a display value

Splitting uses the separator as a literal string and retains source columns. Combining adds a display column. For addresses or product codes, also inspect blank values and rows containing the separator within a value.

Turn wide tables into rows

Unpivot keeps identifier columns and converts other columns into field/value rows. Expanding multiple values in one cell duplicates other columns for each resulting item. Empty items can remain, so check why the output row count grew.

Define the grouping and numeric values

Count counts records; sum and mean require numeric values. Decide whether a numeric-looking code is actually something to add. This summary tool does not reproduce every Excel pivot feature or execute arbitrary spreadsheet formulas.

Choose the right tool

Example inputs illustrate the workflow; they do not promise a particular file size, recognition accuracy or compatibility.

Split columns

Split an address or product code column using a literal separator or fixed width while retaining the original.

Example

city-code: Seoul-A12 → separate city/code columnsOpen the tool →

Combine columns

Combine product and option columns into a consistent display field without removing source columns.

Example

name + option → display columnOpen the tool →

Unpivot table

Convert monthly columns into analysis rows while retaining identifier columns such as product ID.

Example

ID + Jan/Feb columns → ID + field/value rowsOpen the tool →

Pivot table

Summarize order counts or totals by product. Sum and mean require valid numeric values.

Example

order rows + product key → grouped count/sum/meanOpen the tool →

Explode rows

Expand a cell containing multiple tags or options into item rows, repeating the other column values.

Example

ID + red,blue → ID/red and ID/blue rowsOpen the tool →
