GIF and PNG: what changes?
A GIF can play a sequence of frames. The PNG produced here contains only the first frame as a still image. Saving as PNG does not recover colors or detail already lost in the original GIF.
When this tool is useful

Frequently asked questions
Will the PNG keep the animation?
No. This tool saves one still PNG image. Animation timing and subsequent GIF frames are not included.
Which frame is saved?
The first GIF frame is decoded and saved. Choosing a scene or extracting every frame is not supported.
Is transparency preserved?
Transparent areas in the first frame remain transparent in the PNG. The tool does not remove an existing solid background.
Can I convert several GIF files together?
This tool processes one GIF at a time. Save the result, then choose another file.
Understand the formats
PNG
PNG stores raster images with lossless compression and supports an alpha channel for transparency.
Use PNG for screenshots, diagrams and interface graphics. Check the pixel dimensions before placing it in a print document.
A PNG file can be larger than a JPG of a photograph. Browser processing can change metadata and color profiles; lossless compression does not guarantee that every source property is retained.
When is this useful?
Use the first frame of a GIF in a document or thumbnail. This does not extract the complete animation into multiple PNGs.
