Understand the formats
PNG
PNG stores raster images with lossless compression and supports an alpha channel for transparency.
Use PNG for screenshots, diagrams and interface graphics. Check the pixel dimensions before placing it in a print document.
A PNG file can be larger than a JPG of a photograph. Browser processing can change metadata and color profiles; lossless compression does not guarantee that every source property is retained.
SVG
SVG describes shapes and text as a vector image. It scales differently from a PNG, whose detail is limited to a fixed grid of pixels.
Export a self-contained SVG icon or diagram as PNG when an upload form requires a raster image. Choose the output dimensions before saving.
PNG output is no longer editable vector artwork. Coverton rejects scripts, external references and unsafe SVG structures. Fonts or resources not embedded in the SVG may render differently.
When is this useful?
Set pixel dimensions when turning a vector logo into an image for a document. SVGs referencing external resources are restricted.
Input and result example
logo.svg + width/height → logo.pngExamples illustrate the workflow; actual size, support and recognition depend on the source and settings.
