Frequently asked questions
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG does not support transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with your selected background color. Keep the default for a white background.
How can I reduce the JPG file size?
Lower output quality can produce a smaller file, with some loss of detail. Start with the default quality and inspect the result. You can also set maximum dimensions under Size and more options.
Are multiple PNG files combined into one JPG?
Each PNG becomes a separate JPG. You can download multiple results together as a ZIP file. Use the image contact sheet tool to arrange images on one canvas.
Is JPG different from JPEG?
JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. This tool saves results with the .jpg extension.
Understand the formats
JPG / JPEG
JPEG stores raster photographs with lossy compression. JPG and JPEG are two extensions for the same format.
Choose JPG for photographic images when a receiving app needs a widely supported format. Inspect fine text and edges after reducing quality.
JPG does not store transparent pixels. A PNG-to-JPG conversion must fill the background. Saving an existing JPG as PNG cannot restore detail already lost in the JPG.
PNG
PNG stores raster images with lossless compression and supports an alpha channel for transparency.
Use PNG for screenshots, diagrams and interface graphics. Check the pixel dimensions before placing it in a print document.
A PNG file can be larger than a JPG of a photograph. Browser processing can change metadata and color profiles; lossless compression does not guarantee that every source property is retained.
When is this useful?
Submit a transparent logo or screenshot to a JPG-only form. Choose its background first and inspect small text afterward.
